The Raspberry Pi is also suitable for hacking along with many other applications and you can install Kali Linux on the Raspberry Pi. Of course, one should not expect extreme benefits from the computer the size of a credit card, but there are many practical uses such as for a mobile hacking station and with a arm image of Kali Linux, the small Raspberry Pi should not be underestimated.
Install Kali Linux on the Raspberry Pi
In this tutorial I will show step by step how to install Kali Linux on the Raspberry Pi. Since the Kali Linux Arm Image does not contain all the software that is included with the standard version of Kali Linux, I also explain how it can be completely installed on the Raspberry Pi.

Step 1 – Prepare SD Card
After the required software and the Kali Linux image has been downloaded, the SD card can be prepared. I recommend to format the SD card. This is not really necessary, but I have several times the experience that the Kali Linux image does not boot completely if the SD card was not formatted before loading Kali Linux.
- For example, connect the SD card to the computer with a card reader.
- Start the program SD Card Formatter and select the drive letter of the SD card.
- Although it takes much longer, I recommend no quick format. So put the hack in “Overwrite format” and start the formatting.
Step 2 – Write Kali Linux Image to the SD card
Once formatting is complete, the Kali Linux image can be written to the SD card.
- Open the program Win32 Disk Imager and select again the drive letter of the SD card, as well as the storage location where you have stored the Kali Linux image
- Start the writing process by clicking on “Write”
Step 3 – Prepare Raspberry Pi
After writing, the Raspberry Pi can be prepared.
- Insert the SD card into the Raspberry Pi
- Connect a USB keyboard and a USB mouse to the Raspberry Pi
- Connect the Raspberry Pi with an HDMI cable and a monitor or TV
Step 4 – Start Kali Linux
Now Kali Linux can be started for the first time.
- Plug the power adapter into a power outlet and the Raspberry Pi. The boot process will now start automatically.
- Under certain circumstances, the boot process is interrupted. To restart it, press Ctrl + d. Or just follow the instructions on the screen.
- At the start screen, the username and password must be entered. Default username is “root” and password is “toor”.
(The password should of course be changed later)
Step 5 – Completely install and set up Kali Linux
Now Kali Linux can be completely set up. This requires an internet connection. At this point, it does not matter whether you use the Internet via Ethernet cable, the built-in internal Wi-Fi card if a Raspberry Pi 3 is used, or a USB Wi-Fi adapter. However, if the Raspberry Pi with Kali Linux is later to be used for Wi-Fi hacking, a USB Wi-Fi adapter is mandatory. - Create an internet connection
- Open the terminal and check for possible updates with the command:
Since Kali Linux does not use all the space of the SD card, it now has to be deployed for Kali Linux. For this the program gparted is needed.
- Open the terminal and install gparted with the following command:
apt-get install gpartet
- Start gparted with the command:
- Select the SD card click on “Resize” and expand the storage space for Kali Linux by pulling the slider completely to the right
- Then confirm the space extension
Now there is enough space for upgrades and full installation of Kali Linux with all programs for Wi-Fi hacking, password cracking and so on.
- Install all upgrades with the command:
Now the rest of the programs can be installed by Kali Linux, so that the Raspberry Pi can be fully used with Kali Linux. The installation of the programs will take some time and some settings will have to be made during the installation.
- Start the full installation of Kali Linux with the following command:
apt-get install kali-linux-full
